MOA GETAWAY PINE MOUNTAIN - September 2018

Pine Mountain State Resort Park
Pineville, Kentucky
September 6 - 9 (1224 miles)

Left the house Thursday morning at 8:30 to meet Becky at the Marathon gas station in Supply.  After lunch and two fillups we stopped a little before 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Asheville (435 Smokey Park Highway).  This hotel will get a great review ... the story starts out with our sink in the bathroom being plugged up and the maintenance man coming to fix it.  We ended up moving to a new room which was right next door.  We moved our stuff through the adjoining door.  Soon after I decided to use the Keurig coffee maker, but after many tries couldn't get coffee to come out.  Called downstairs again and immediately they send someone up including our maintenance man next door who promptly fixed it.  Great service by the maintenance people and front desk.  To top it off Becky and I both got free vouchers to their deluxe breakfast.

Only about 2 hours to the rally so we were one of the first to arrive.
It was only 11:30 but our room was ready and we could register.

Dry bag, and rally t-shirt in welcome bag

Our friend Jean-Guy (who rode with us on last years Saturday ride) was there with his companion Jackie.  They won the prize for the longest distance to the rally (about 3,000 kilometers).   Dinner was hamburgers and BBQ in the main conference room.

Our route for Saturday was Kentucky back roads to Cumberland Falls State Park.

We did a detour from the trip ... Route 700 just after Whitley City
Five of us rode together ... Becky, Jill, Jean, Jackie and Steve (from Ohio on a red S1150).  This time Jean was the one with the map and GPS and led the ride to the falls

Our dinner companion at Cumberland Falls State Park Lodge

At the end of the ride Steve wanted to take the back road to the lodge and the rest of us stopped for gas and returned via the front entrance to the lodge.  When we got to the parking lot Steve was there with a flat tire.  Lots of people came out to the 90 degree parking lot to help ... Bill, Ray (the MOA representative), Deb and mostly Becky who tried to use the BMW Roadside Assistance Plan.  What we learned was the assistance is not exclusively for motorcycles but a general assistance/towing company.  They will tow you to a motorcycle dealer and that dealer will change/fix the tire and replace for free if you have the platinum plan.   The Plan wasn't working so Steve called the Honda dealer 12 miles away and they came with a trailer and took the bike back to the shop and put on a new tire.  He even made it back in time for dinner.

Long ride home from Pineville to Wilmington/Bolivia.  Took a different route home through Virginia.  With two gas stops we made it to 78 and 211 in 8 1/2 hours.  Then we both had about 45 minutes to our houses.  Made it home in time to prepare for hurricane Florence!
